A new eco-friendly sports car will soon be visible on the streets. Porsche finally announced that they would take orders for the new 918 Spyder- an all-wheel drive, advanced plug-in hybrid super sports car powered by a mid-mounted 500-plus horsepower, 4.0 litre V8 engine assisted by two electric motors with 218 combined horsepower.
Porsche claims that the new 918 Spyder will sip only about 3 liter of fuel per 100 kilometer and emit 70 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer- pretty good numbers for a sports car that can go from zero to 60 mph in just about 3.1 seconds and top at 199 mph.
On the other hand, running alone on the two electric motors can drive the 918 for 16 miles or boost the speed upto 94 mph for a limited distance given the proper conditions.
The electric motors are powered by liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged for seven hours from any standard household outlet.
By combining breathtaking speeds and fuel economy, the Porsche 918 Spyder allows you to enjoy high speeds longer.
The final external design of the Porsche 918 Spyder is a combination of Carrera GT, 917, RS Spyder and the 2010 Hybrid Spyder concept car. But unlike the previously revealed concept model, the 918 will be a two-seater and will feature a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic monocoque and manual roof system with removable panels that can be kept in the front luggage compartment.
The 918 Spyder will be limited to 918 units and should arrive in the top markets by 2013.
